About this policy

This policy covers the native Sky Tonight app for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch and its widgets, developed by Jason Scott. The separate website has different providers, described below. The native app has no user accounts, advertisements, tracking or analytics SDKs. The developer does not operate an application server or receive your observing locations.

What stays on your device

Saved place names, coordinates, time zones, viewing preferences, cached forecasts and reminder settings are stored in the app’s private storage and its dedicated shared container for Sky Tonight widgets. Astronomy is calculated on your device. These records are not uploaded to the developer. Your device’s backup settings may include app data in Apple backups. Saved records remain until you remove them, clear saved data in Settings, or delete the app and its data.

Apple Watch companion

The iPhone calculates astronomy and sends saved observing places, preferences, forecast samples, optional attributed weather and reminder status to your paired Apple Watch using Apple Watch Connectivity. These records are cached in a separate private container on the watch for the app and its complications. Transfers can wait until the devices reconnect. Watch reminder requests are confirmed and scheduled on iPhone; system notification settings control delivery. Compass assistance requests your watch location only while using it to check that you are near the selected observing place. That temporary position is not sent to the developer or saved as an observing place. Removing places, disabling weather or clearing saved data on iPhone updates the watch when it next receives a sync. Delete the watch app and its data to remove its offline copy without waiting for that sync.

Optional device location and place searches

Use my location asks for permission to obtain your location while using the app. The location is sent to Apple’s geocoding service to determine its place name and time zone, then saved as an observing place. Find place sends your typed search to Apple. Entering coordinates and a time zone manually avoids geocoding. The app does not continuously track your position or request background location access. You can deny location permission and still use saved or manually entered places.

Optional Apple Weather

Weather is off until you enable Include Apple Weather in Settings. Enabling it allows the app and its widgets to send saved observing coordinates to Apple WeatherKit to request cloud, precipitation and wind forecasts, including during background refreshes. This uses the saved coordinates; it does not obtain new device locations in the background. Apple processes these requests under its own privacy policy. Official Apple Weather attribution and data-source links accompany displayed conditions. Turning weather off stops new requests and removes cached conditions; a request already sent cannot be recalled.

Orbital data and network providers

The app downloads public ISS orbital elements from CelesTrak and uses Where the ISS at as a backup. Your observing coordinates and place names are not included in those requests. Network providers necessarily receive connection information such as your IP address and may keep operational logs under their own policies. Requests use encrypted HTTPS connections. Opening an external provider, support or policy link is subject to that website’s privacy practices.

Notifications and visible information

Reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device after you grant notification permission. There is no developer push-notification server. Reminder text and widgets can reveal the selected place name and event details on your Home or Lock Screen. Control notification previews, widget visibility and permissions in your device settings.

Your choices and deletion

In Sky Tonight Settings, use Edit places beside Saved places to remove a saved place and its cached forecast and pending reminders. Clear saved data removes all saved places, forecast caches and app reminders, switches weather off and restores the default Perth location and evening-first preference. Fresh astronomy and public orbital data may then be calculated or downloaded. You can disable location and notification permissions in iOS or iPadOS Settings. Deleting local data does not erase provider logs or existing device backups; contact the relevant provider or manage your backups for those records.

Support correspondence

If you email support, Jason Scott receives your email address and whatever information you choose to include. It is used to respond and troubleshoot the issue. Keep precise coordinates and other personal details out of screenshots unless necessary. Support correspondence is retained only as needed to resolve and reasonably follow up the request or meet applicable obligations. Email the support address to request deletion of correspondence held by the developer.

The separate website

The website at iss-flyover.pages.dev is hosted by Cloudflare Pages. These privacy and support pages are static and contain no analytics, external fonts or advertising. Cloudflare receives connection information when serving them. The interactive website is separate from the native app: it can use Open-Meteo for weather, OpenStreetMap Nominatim for place naming, and Google Fonts, alongside public ISS services. Those providers receive network information, and location-dependent website requests may include coordinates. The native app does not use Open-Meteo or those website place-name/font services.

Changes and contact

This policy will be updated when the app’s data practices change. Contact Jason Scott at js.dev.one@proton.me for privacy questions, support or requests about information held by the developer.
